Welcome to Africa on Foot Wilderness Trails

Return to the rhythm of nature on a mobile walking safari in the Greater Kruger region

Africa on Foot Wilderness Trails is a one-of-a-kind mobile safari experience in South Africa. It’s a unique 3-night walking safari through the Maseke Balule Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger.

Designed for adventurers and nature lovers, this immersive wilderness experience offers a walking safari unlike any other. A sister camp to Africa on Foot in the Klaserie, the Wilderness Trails takes guests deep into the bush for three nights of fully catered mobile camping, with each night spent at a different scenic location within the reserve.

Inspired by the popularity of the walking experiences at Africa on Foot, the owners created this specialised 3-night trail in the neighbouring Maseke Balule Game Reserve to offer guests an even deeper connection with the African wilderness.

Each day is spent exploring the 8,000-hectare reserve on foot, accompanied by a professionally trained guide and tracker team who provide an informative, thrilling, and unforgettable safari experience. Evenings are spent at fully set-up mobile campsites under the stars, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the bush.

A maximum of 8 guests are accommodated at a time in 4 tents to ensure an intimate and exclusive experience.

Situated in the Maseke, part of the Balule Nature Reserve, the camp is easily accessible. Self-drivers can drive directly to Chacma Bush Camp and leave their cars at camp, which is the headquarters of Africa on Foot Wilderness Trails.

The camp is easily accessible for fly-ins and self-drivers, with the closest airport being Hoedspruit/Eastgate airport.

For self-drivers, the route is easy and signposted from the road. You will need to follow the Africa on Foot Wilderness Trails directions, and NOT Google Maps or GPS.

Camp life centres around a fire-lit boma, where safari chairs circle a crackling flame and a dining table is set beneath open starry skies. A small bush bar offers refreshments, and wholesome gourmet meals are prepared on the fire while guests soak in the uninterrupted views of the river and wild landscapes.

Each mobile camp is fully set up on arrival, requiring no participation in logistics. Guests sleep in 4 canvas dome tents, each accommodating two people on proper mattresses, complete with crisp bed linen, duvets, and pillows. Each tent features an en-suite canvas bathroom with a traditional bucket shower and an eco-friendly chemical toilet.

During your 3-night walking safari through the Maseke Balule Game Reserve, guests can expect exceptional wildlife encounters in one of the Greater Kruger’s most untouched wilderness areas. The reserve is home to the Big Five, along with a wide variety of plains game including elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffalo, rhinos, giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, waterbuck, wildebeest, bushbuck, steenbok, and duiker.

Predators found within the reserve include lion, leopard, spotted hyena, cheetah, African wild dog, crocodile, jackal, civet, genet, and honey badger. While every trail is unique and sightings can never be guaranteed, the diversity of wildlife and the thrill of tracking animals on foot make each safari truly memorable.

Bird enthusiasts will also be rewarded with an incredible variety of species, from colourful woodland birds and kingfishers to hornbills, rollers, bee-eaters, storks, herons, and impressive birds of prey soaring overhead. Seasonal changes bring different birding highlights throughout the year, making Wilderness Trails a rewarding experience for both wildlife lovers and avid birders alike.
